The Legend of Ochi

A musical primate language co-created with director Isaiah Saxon for his 2025 feature film The Legend of Ochi, from A24. The whistled language spoken by the fictional primates in the film is primarily based on edited samples of human whistler Paul Manalatos combined with wildlife calls and songs. However, for the climactic final scene in the film it was necessary to extend, musically arrange and blend these sounds so that they fit seamlessly with composer David Longstreth’s orchestral score. A combination of whistles by Manalatos, whalesong, walrus calls, birdsong, and flute were all pitch-shifted, arranged, and edited to create the characteristically trilled and hocketed song of the Ochi.
